By Fire Chief John Nixon
May 2, 2018

On May 1, 2018 the Fire District has implemented their plan, approved in the April board meeting, to reduce the on-duty personnel staffing at the fire stations. The impact of this reduction has dropped our daily staff from 8 firefighters down to 7 on-duty for each shift. This results in a crew running with only 3 people rather then 4 as had been previously scheduled. This operation, known as a jump company response, means that the crew moves to either the Ambulance or the Fire Engine for the appropriate response. This removes the coverage to the entire station area when that crew is busy on their assignment. The remaining on duty crew at the other station will be responsible for coverage to the entire 38 square mile area. In some cases, response times to emergency situations may be longer as a result of this action. This measure was enacted after the recent failure of the referendum ballot on March 20th.The estimated savings of over $120,000 was necessary so that needed funds can be designated for essential vehicle and equipment costs.
